The Biden administration is reportedly considering plea agreements for the suspected architect of the September 11, 2001 attacks and four of his cohorts that would mean they never face the death penalty.
According to The Associated Press, a letter was sent to several families of victims of the terrorist attacks, informing them that a plea deal could be negotiated which may involve eliminating the possibility of capital punishment for the suspects.
“The Office of the Chief Prosecutor has been negotiating and is considering entering into pre-trial agreements,” the letter reportedly said.
It also allegedly told families that while no plea agreement “has been finalized, and may never be finalized, it is possible that a [pre-trial agreements] in this case would remove the possibility of the death penalty.”
The letter, dated August 1, 2023, gave recipients until August 21, 2023 to respond with any comments or questions related to a potential plea agreement from the FBI’s Victim Services Division. The Associated Press was not provided comment on the matter by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the man believed to be the mastermind behind the September 11th attacks, has yet to have a trial date set. According to the 9/11 Commission, Mohammed proposed an attack on the United States to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who then gave approval for a plan of action.
Additionally, four other defendants connected with aiding the hijackers in various capacities would benefit from a plea bargain.
The Associated Press has reported repeated delays and legal disputes in the processing of the men at Guantanamo Bay, with allegations of interrogation and torture by the CIA.
Jim Riches, a retired deputy fire chief from New York City whose son was a firefighter killed on 9/11, expressed his belief that the defendants should be tried in civilian court.
Riches had attended hearings in Guantanamo Bay in 2009, but has since lost faith in the process.
“How can you have any faith in it?” Riches asked. The letter “gives us a little hope,” he added.
“No matter how many letters they send, until I see it, I won’t believe it,” said Riches, about justice being served.
Another recipient of the letter, Peter Brady, said that it’s about “holding people responsible, and they’re taking that away with this plea.”
Brady, whose father was tragically lost in the terrorist attacks, declared that the case must be seen through its legal proceedings rather than concluding with a plea deal.
