Shivanthi Sathanandan, the Vice Chairwoman of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota, was violently carjacked in front of her children. She shared a photograph on Facebook of her bloodied face, along with details of the injuries she had sustained. Prior to this incident, Sathanandan had called for police reform and proposed to “dismantle” them.
“Yesterday my children and I were violently car jacked in the driveway of our home in Minneapolis,” wrote Sathanandan. “Four very young men, all carrying guns, beat me violently down to the ground in front of our kids. The young men held our neighbors up at gunpoint when they ran over and tried to help me. All in broad daylight.”
At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, a carjacking occurred in front of Sathanandan’s residence. She reported having sustained a broken leg, deep lacerations on her head, and significant bruising and cuts across her body.
“Look at my face in the picture. This is the face of a mother who just had the s*** beaten out of her,” she added.
She also demanded that criminal penalties be increased in order to deter violent crimes.
“We need to get illegal guns off of our streets, catch these young people who are running wild creating chaos across our city and HOLD THEM IN CUSTODY AND PROSECUTE THEM,” she wrote.
“Look at my face,” Sathanandan added. “REMEMBER ME when you are thinking about supporting letting juveniles and young people out of custody to roam our streets instead of HOLDING THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS.”
Following her recent post on Facebook, Sathanandan received an outpour of support from friends and family. However, some pointed out that she had previously stated her desire to “dismantle” the Minneapolis police force. Despite this, she thanked the officers who aided her during the “terrifying experience”.
The car was later recovered after the suspects abandoned it according to KSTP-TV. In response to this incident, Minnesota DFL Chairman Ken Martin released a statement.
“I am heartbroken at the news of Shivanthi’s attack. It is my sincere hope that the people who assaulted Shivanthi are quickly brought to justice and face punishment commensurate with the severity of their crimes,” said Martin.
“My heart goes out to Shivanthi and her family and I hope their recovery from such a horrifying experience is as swift as possible,” he added.
A similar incident was reported in 2021 when a Pennsylvania Democrat was carjacked in broad daylight after supporting the “defund the police” movement.
