House GOP Floats Biden Impeachment Over ‘Conspiracy To Obstruct’ Hunter Deposition

The House is launching an investigation into Joe Biden’s role in Hunter’s refusal to answer a subpoena and committing Contempt of Congress, in order to impeach Joe Biden on those grounds. Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) said in a letter demanding a host of documents and communications by January 10 on the role that Joe played. His White House spokeswoman admitted that Joe was aware of what Hunter planned to do.

Comer said:

“Hunter Biden today defied lawful subpoenas and we will now initiate contempt of Congress proceedings.”

“We will not provide special treatment because his last name is Biden.”

In a joint statement Jordan and Comer wrote in the letter:

“Hunter Biden today defied lawful subpoenas and we will now initiate contempt of Congress proceedings. We will not provide special treatment because his last name is Biden. As our committees were today prepared to depose Hunter Biden, he chose to make a public statement on Capitol Hill instead where he said his father, Joe Biden was not financially involved in his family’s business dealings. Exactly how was Joe Biden involved? Evidence shows Joe Biden met with Hunter Biden’s business associates and his name was at the center of the family business strategy.”

KJP said on December 13 of Hunter’s presser:

“The president was familiar with what Hunter was going to say today. And, you know, look, he’s proud of his son. He and the first lady are proud of his son, how he’s rebuilding his life back. He’s going to focus on what is needed on the American people. Hunter, and I’ve said this many times, is a private citizen, and so certainly I would have to refer you to — to his representatives.”

Biden’s White House Counsel Edward Siskel has until January 10 to produce:

1. All documents and communications sent or received by employees of the Executive Office of the President regarding the deposition of Hunter Biden, including but not limited to communications with Hunter Biden, Winstron & Strawn LLP, and Kevin Morris; and

2. All documents and communications sent or received by employees of the Executive Office of the President regarding President Biden’s statement about his family’s business associates on December 6, 2023.

In their letter, addressed to White House Counsel Edward Siskel, the chairmen highlighted how White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that President Biden was “familiar” with what Hunter Biden was going to say at a mid-December press event outside the U.S. Capitol.

Hunter Biden used the Capitol Hill appearance to publicly demand House Republicans provide him a public hearing instead of appearing at the closed-door interview in compliance with the congressional subpoena issued by House Republicans. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) told POLITICO that he reserved the spot where the First Son delivered the remarks and he appeared at the event.

Though Jean-Pierre has refused to offer any more details when pressed on whether President Biden tried to talk his son out of violating a congressional subpoena, Jordan and Comer said they are faced with the “troubling new question” of whether the commander in chief “corruptly sought to influence or obstruct” their proceeding. “Such conduct could constitute an impeachable offense,” they wrote.
